How Much Water to Store

< Water Storage

Individual water needs vary based on age, health, physical condition, activity, diet and climate, however, a general rule of thumb is to store a MINIMUM of one gallon per person per day for hydration, food preparation and hygiene.

Fun Facts:

  • Children, elderly, sick, nursing mothers, or those who are physically exerting themselves will need more.
  • A normally active person needs about three quarts of fluid daily, from water and other beverages.
  • A medical emergency might require additional water.
  • If you live in a warm weather climate more water may be necessary. In very hot temperatures, water needs can double.

Store a BARE MINIMUM of two weeks supply for your family. When feasible, it is recommended to store a one month suppply. If you are unable to store this quantity, store as much as you can, then store more water as space, budget, and ability allow.
